02 Sep Creepy Crawly
The Grade 00s tackled the Creepy Crawly theme with enthusiasm. The following two weeks had children finding all sorts of insects in the school garden and at home, which they collected and eagerly showed their friends.
To encourage scientific discovery, we posed the following question to the children: “Do ants prefer to eat sweet or salty food?” In order to investigate this, we first made a prediction and recorded it on whiteboards. After which, the sweet jam was placed on one paper plate and salty cheese on another. The children went on a hunt to find a colony of ants, and the paper plates were placed in that area. Then came the long wait to observe their findings. Much to our surprise and contrary to many of our predictions, we observed that ants prefer salty cheese to sweet jam. Apparently, ants do not naturally produce salt in their bodies and need to find it in the food they eat.
