17 Mar Little Lab Coats Demonstration
Molly and Marius, the Little Lab Coats mice, visited Uplands Pre-Prep this term. They helped Ellie the Elephant with her toothache by making her a giant toothbrush and enough toothpaste to use, as she could not find it in the small valley store.
During this experiment, the children watched the mice make ‘Elephant Toothpaste.’ Yeast acted as a catalyst and speeded up the reaction to break down the hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water. Because it happened so fast, it created many bubbles quickly. Generally, foam is awesome for children to see, but the foam made in this demonstration is extra special, as every bubble is filled with oxygen. The children also noticed steam form as a product of the experiment, an indication of an exothermic reaction – that means it created heat as well!
The children really enjoyed this lesson and were exposed to new information and scientific vocabulary.
