14 Nov Matthew Prior Cricket Festival
The Matthew Prior Cricket Festival is a memorial festival in honour of Matthew John Prior. This cricket festival is an annual event hosted by Uplands Preparatory in memory of Matthew John Prior who sadly passed away whilst opening the batting for Uplands Prep 1st XI in Lydenburg on 16th September 2010. We honour Matthew’s memory, celebrate his life and the spirit in which he played cricket. Uplands, like many of our visiting schools, enjoys a proud cricket tradition. We strive to create a passion for the game of cricket, play within the spirit of the game and show sportsmanship when we play. The lessons acquired and the relationships that are developed between teammates and opponents are lasting.
This year saw the 6th Matthew Prior Festival, which hosted 13 teams as follows: Hatfield Christian School, King Edward VII Prep School, St Dunstan’s 1st XI and U12A Prep team, Trinity House Little Falls 1st XI, Tygervalley College 1st XI, Waterkloof House Prep School 2nd XI and 3rd XI, as well as Uplands Prep 1st XI and U11A.
The festival started off on Friday 25th October with teams playing 40 Over Cricket. On Saturday 26th October, all teams played two T20’s, followed by a trip to the Kruger Park, during which all players were able to have private guided tours on open Safari vehicles. Teams played in a Super 6’s tournament on Sunday which saw the KEPS boys emerging victorious. Cricket was played in true festival style, with no emphasis on winning at all costs, but rather developing and fostering lasting relationships.
A festival of this nature would not be possible without sponsors, so we would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors: New Africa Developments (NAD), Mopani Pharmacy, Prime Sports, Dollie Gin Company, Mario’s Butchery, Talking Turf and Ingwenyama Lodge.
A great weekend of cricket was had by all and I look forward to our 2020 Festival.
