MEET OUR TEAM
Uplands Outreach is privileged to call upon the skills and expertise of the Uplands staff, and the greater Uplands community. There are many individuals who assist us on a regular basis, and who are essential ingredients in our success.
Outreach has a dedicated executive committee, seven full-time staff members, various part-time consultants and advisors, and several volunteers and interns (many of whom are graduates of our programmes).
We are audited annually, and audited financial statements are available upon request.

Dr Nicky de Bruyn
Nicky has a BA (Government), a MPA (Masters Degree in Public Affairs, specialising in public management) and a PhD (Education Leadership). Nicky is a specialist in non-profit management, community development practices, and educational leadership. Nicky is passionate about combining goodwill and good management in the non-profit arena. She enjoys working with adults, especially school leaders, to unleash their talent. Nicky enjoys reading a wide variety of topics, research, writing, music and watching her son play sport. She is married to Drew Paterson and their son, Thomas, is at Uplands.
Violah has a Primary School Teacher’s Diploma, a BA (Education) from the University of the North, an Advanced Certificate in Education (ACE) from the University of Pretoria (for learners with special needs), and an ACE from the University of Johannesburg in School Management and Leadership, among other qualifications. Violah was previously principal at Sojuba Primary School and deputy principal of Vulamasango Primary School. She is passionate about working with children, acquiring knowledge, travelling, development and interacting with people. Violah is married to Jan Moya and has two daughters, Fiona and Sihle, a graduate of Uplands College.
Dr Joanne York
Monitoring, Evaluation and Communications Officer
Joanne performs monitoring and evaluation processes for all of Uplands Outreach’s programmes, and also maintains key channels of communication, including website and Facebook management for Uplands Outreach. Jo has her Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE, UNISA) and has taught Grade 10 Maths at Uplands College. She is also a South African registered Homeopath (Masters in Homeopathy, UJ) and has a BSc degree with majors in Psychology and the Sciences (WITS University). She has a real passion for helping people in whatever way necessary for them to reach their full potential in life.
Beauty has more than 17 years’ experience at Uplands Outreach. She has a certificate in
Office Administration, and an International Computer Driver's Licence (ICDL) qualification from Unigrad College. Beauty was born and raised in the Mahushu community and attended Mntungwa Secondary School. Beauty has a wealth of knowledge on Outreach’s partner schools and is passionate about the power of education and development. She is married to Shadrack Mthambo and has three children: Gomotso, Benny and Londeka, a graduate of Uplands College.
Maths Specialist and Field Officer
Boy-boy has been a Maths teaching intern at Uplands College for a number of years, and will soon graduate with his BEd in Maths from UNISA. Boy-boy hails from Bushbuckridge and knows our local communities well. Together with Violah, he forms an integral part of our programmes, specialising in Maths, on-site coaching and site support visits.
Katia van der Merwe
Finance and Office Administrator
Katia has a National Diploma in Logistics Management from UNISA (University of South Africa) with 8 years of experience in the logistics field. Katia was Finance Administrator and HR Administrator at Uplands College for 5 years before transferring to Uplands Outreach. Katia is passionate about planning, organising, and being part of a team making a difference in schools and in the community. Katia enjoys reading, music, travelling and working with children. Katia is married to Deon van der Merwe and has two children, Samantha and Rui, who attend Uplands.
Tumelo is a graduate of the Uplands Outreach Learners for Excellence (L4E) Saturday Maths Programme (2012 - 2014). He has been working as an office intern at Uplands Outreach since January 2017, while he completes his BEd with UNISA. Tumelo offers tremendous support to the team, assisting with day-to-day programme logistics and office maintenance. Tumelo loves helping and motivating young learners, and has aspirations of one day being an Educational Psychologist
