ANJA SNYMAN (College Class of 2017)
@anjasnyman
I enrolled at the University of Pretoria for a Nursing Science Degree. Honestly, if I had been told four years ago what this career entailed I think I would have had second thoughts. In the end, though, this journey has been surprisingly spectacular for me. The years have been filled with circumstances and learning curves. I work a 13-hour day and night shifts, and have witnessed situations from extreme joy to absolute sadness with patients in the healthcare system. I have brought babies into this world and seen people leave it and I have worked in mental institutions with diagnoses that most people will never witness. I have seen open heart surgery, seen cancer remission, and sat with a stab wound victim for hours – you name it, I’ve seen it.
Uplands equipped me in every way. It taught me a lot but mostly endurance and leadership. But most of all, my most special time was participating on the netball court. Uplands shaped me and other extraordinary individuals.
So I encourage the Uplands’ youngsters, before life gets real and the world beyond school approaches and your boundaries are challenged, try everything and do as much as you can. Have fun, keep fit, read more books and take advantage of the world class facilities.
