01 Mar Ash Wednesday
This is a solemn day that follows the feasting and jollity of Shrove Tuesday. It is the first day of Lent, and at Uplands, as in many churches, we have a special service where we have the sign of the cross marked in ash on our foreheads. I dip my finger into a bowl of ash (ash has been a sign of sorrow and repentance), which comes from the burning of the palm crosses from last year’s Palm Sunday. I then mark the foreheads of those who wish to come forward, with the ash.
