DIEGO SILVA TORRES (College Class of 2017)

My memories of Uplands remain a big part of my life, as it was the place I learnt the most, and it set the tone for my future.

In 2018 I headed for the United Kingdom and studied Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Brighton University. After completing three years, I gave it up to do something more suited to my dreams. I relocated to Lisbon in Portugal and studied at the Nova University of Lisbon. I was denied entrance to study engineering, but was accepted to study towards a business degree. I also obtained a Masters in Finance. For some it may seem crazy to make such a drastic jump, but in the end I now have my own business, with a social media side, where I train others to work in social media. My business is an online one and assisting others doing what they love is such a reward in itself.

To the youngsters at Uplands, I have this advice, which helped me to achieve my dream:

The first “No” you hear, must not put you down. Work around that, and turn it into something positive – even if it takes you a long time, just keep at it. You can do whatever you want to do, you simply have to believe in yourself.
