LUCAS JANSEN VAN VUUREN (College Class of 2006)
Looking back on my years at Uplands, I find myself smiling when I think about all the happy memories. Being a pupil at Uplands provided me with the best education I could ever hope to have had. I know that it had a major impact in my life when I went through an emotional transition from high school to university, with all the challenges I faced. Ultimately, what I remember most does not come from the actual education taught in the classrooms.
The school field trips to the Kruger National Park, Eagle Adventure Camps, Blyde River Canyon and many other panoramic sites, the sports tours to Cape Town and KwaZulu-Natal and the fantastic life in boarding that I experienced from Grade 4 to Grade 12 gave me the fondest memories. The camaraderie and teamwork between us developed with each different excursion and sports trip. The school provided a safe environment where we could flourish as individuals, and also made me understand what it means to become a good team player. Important social skills were taught in a manner which is difficult to quantify, but tangible nevertheless.
I believe my rich school experience has served me, and many other past pupils like me, well into my work life and beyond.
