Meet Kerry Dewar, the newly-appointed Head of Academics at Uplands College

Kerry Dewar assumed the position of Head of Academics at Uplands College on May 1st, bringing with her a wealth of experience and a passion for education. With 16 years dedicated to the realm of private education in South Africa, Kerry has honed her skills as a committed team player, adept organiser and effective communicator.

Previously serving as the Assistant Academic Director and HOD of Life Sciences at St Alban’s College, Kerry has demonstrated her dedication to educational excellence. Her academic journey began at the University of Pretoria, where she pursued a Bachelor of Science degree with a focus on Genetics. Following this, she obtained her Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PCGE), specialising in Life Sciences FET, which has solidified her expertise in the field of Life Sciences.

Kerry’s expertise lies in Life Sciences, evident through her role as an Independent Examinations Board (IEB) Examiner and Portfolio moderator. Her involvement in national examination processes underscores her commitment to maintaining academic standards at the highest level.

Beyond her professional endeavours, Kerry cherishes her family life. She shares her home on the Uplands campus with her husband Chad, a tennis coach, and their daughter Emma who is currently in Grade 4. The serene environment of the campus resonates with Kerry, aligning with her love for nature and community.

Kerry’s vision for Uplands College revolves around refining academic policies and processes to ensure a rigorous academic structure. She emphasises the importance of academic discipline, while fostering innovation and collaboration across the campus. With a focus on inquiry-based and theme-based learning, she aims to cultivate a culture that values the process over results.

Kerry is particularly impressed by the wide array of subject choices available at Uplands College, recognising it as a strategic advantage. She plans to nurture newer subjects to further distinguish the school academically. Additionally, she emphasises the significance of maintaining robust academic support structures to accommodate diverse learning needs.

Kerry is actively involved in supporting students’ tertiary planning, both domestically and internationally. Her collaboration with Global Education exemplifies her commitment to providing students with opportunities for higher education. By leveraging the international recognition of IEB qualifications, she ensures that Uplands students are well-equipped for success on a global scale.
